Livestock Farm Manure Treatment: A Technological Path from Pollution Source to Resource Utilization

The effective treatment and resource utilization of livestock manure are essential for the sustainable development of the industry. This article introduces the current mainstream technological approaches for manure collection and processing.

If livestock manure is improperly treated, it can cause severe pollution of water bodies, soil, and air. However, viewed from another perspective, manure is actually a resource that has been misplaced. The development of modern livestock farming equipment is now focused on establishing a technological pathway that transforms manure—from being a “pollutant” into a “resource.” This endeavor would not be possible without the support of a range of specialized devices.

The first step in manure management is efficient cleaning. Traditional scraper systems have been replaced by more automated equipment. Scraper-type manure cleaners operate smoothly and provide thorough cleaning, making them suitable for a variety of pit types. Conveyor-belt manure removal systems, on the other hand, are primarily used in tiered cage systems. In these systems, manure falls directly onto a conveyor belt, which transports it out of the barn at scheduled intervals, enabling immediate, dry separation of manure from waste. This results in reduced odors and makes subsequent processing much more convenient.

The manure that has been cleared can be utilized in a variety of ways, each corresponding to different processing equipment:

Aerobic fermentation for organic fertilizer production: This is the most common treatment method. It requires equipment such as solid-liquid separators (for liquid manure), turning machines, and fermentation tanks (or pits). Through high-temperature aerobic fermentation, pathogenic bacteria and parasite eggs are eliminated, producing stable, harmless, and high-quality organic fertilizer.

Anaerobic fermentation for biogas production: For large-scale livestock farms or regional centralized treatment centers, constructing biogas projects is an important option. Relevant equipment includes pretreatment facilities, anaerobic digestion tanks, biogas purification and storage systems, generator sets, or upgrading units—these can convert manure and other organic wastes into clean energy sources such as biogas, electricity, or biomethane.

Producing insect protein: Utilizing insects such as black soldier flies to process manure is an emerging technology. It requires specialized equipment, including rearing trays and separation screens. After being consumed by the insects, the manure is transformed into high-value insect protein (a feed ingredient) and organic fertilizer in the form of insect frass.

The pressure from environmental policies and the growing market demand for organic fertilizers are jointly driving the booming market for manure treatment equipment. Future technologies will place greater emphasis on processing efficiency, energy self-sufficiency, and the value of resource recovery, helping livestock farms truly transform their environmental protection cost centers into potential profit centers.
